X-keys Memory Resident Mode

All X-keys PS/2 devices operate in Memory Resident Mode and the following X-keys USB devices have the capability to emulate this mode of operation.

In Memory Resident Mode, the X-keys stores keyboard sequences and combinations in on-board, non-volatile memory. This feature is very useful for programming an X-keys on one system and moving it to another. In this way, we can support Operating Systems which are incompatible with our programming software.

A System Administrator or Assistive Technology Professional can also use this method to set up an X-keys on their computer and move it to the end user’s computer without installing additional software.

Macro Maker vs Macro Recorder

X-keys Macro Maker menu bar

Macro Maker is the programming element of our Macro Works software. Macro Works translates data from an X-keys SE device into something your Operating System can recognize. Macro Works must be running on your computer for the X-keys SE to work in it's normal mode of operation.

Macro Recorder software creates a data file which may be downloaded into the X-keys internal memory. The X-keys must be in Memory Resident Mode to receive the file. The X-keys then acts just like a USB keyboard, playing back keystroke sequences and combinations as if they were typed in.

Switching a USB X-keys SE to Memory Resident Mode

Most X-keys USB devices without the “SE” designation normally operate in Memory Resident Mode and no conversion is necessary.

Our latest release of Macro Recorder will detect if your X-keys is in Memory Resident Mode and will ask your permission to convert it if conversion is required. If you need help finding the programming switch, please consult your manual or find a manual for your X-keys here: techdocs.php.
